Group Crit: Kelsey Anderson and Karen Villalba

01_Balance_Straight

This is a straight line study that reflects balance and the picture on the right is of a trash can.

Different that were said where the digital craft, to get the the last stroke of the line study and the first stroke of the image to match. One of the good comments was the texture of the image , I feel though that as mentioned in the last critique my compositions should follow the same format this one is the only one that breaks from the horizontal format of the rest of my line studies. I'm going to try matching the image as closely as I can.

There were suggestions made in regards the image on the (left ) to try to rotate it or inverse it and see wether it will help the flowing of the transition. Kelsey view on wether the images didn't really match, yet she felt that the essence or the dialogue between the images is evident. I'm going to take Kelsey's criticism and try different rotations.

Kelsey liked the simplicity and it's contrast. She felt that is a good one for the final pile.

Kelsey liked the dents on the gate of the image on the (right). Though compare to the other previous ones , this one is too similar to the line study.

01_Progression_Straight

I made changes on the line study on the (left) based on the last critique and my objective was to crop the image as much as I could and keeping the texture and elements around this gate. Kelsey view was that I need to crop it further ,on the side there are elements of the brick walls surrounding this gate that make it feel not balanced. My solution is to crop it even further and possibly just leave the bottom side of the gate.

During the critique I showed this one after my other train juxtaposition and I agree with Kelsey that the other is stronger than this one. The thickness of the lines in the train don't show so much of the progression. She felt that still I should keep it in the mix of the compositions. I'm going to try a different image for this progression line study.

01_Random_Straight

I fix aspects that in the last critique were not working. Kelsey noticed that the window has a rounded edge so the middle window of the train looks a bit off and that i should move it more to the left to have a straighter edge just like in the line study. To watch for my digital craft , on the top left corner there a vertical line that is not part of the train that is very distracting.I'm going to carefully line them up and remove the line on the left corner.

I made the image (right) with more contrast and made the edges white and I zoomed out and it matches more to my line study. Kelsey liked it and she felt that this also should be in the final pile.

I have to retake this image as I tried to zoom in it got much more pixelated. I took the advice of the last critique to make my image connect it to my line study and create it into a cohesive whole. Kelsey felt that it was good and that I should retake it the photograph to have a greater resolution.

Kelsey saw where I was going with the image, the top and bottom match but the brick is too distracting and the window is very dominant and that break is not visible in the line study. Kelsey suggested and I thinks is good to take the photo from the side of the building where is not as distracting.

On the tracing I took some of the lines and Kelsey felt that they did connect and to see wether I should remove some lines from middle and down of my line study. I will try and see wether it looks better.

In regards to this juxtaposition , Kelsey suggested that I should see it really zoomed out and see wether the images still match and to try to rotate one or the other to match them more evenly.

Today my goal is to take more photographs and do more editing on my previous studies to improve them.

International Jazz Festival Zurich, 1989

In this poster for an International Jazz Festival, the repetition of the circular lines around the center image of ear create rhythm in the composition. These circular lines reflect a frequency , or sound waves. The lines at the bottom page are reminiscent to piano keys, the lines enhance the meaning of the event taking place which is the Jazz Festival. The designer use of lines ads to dimension, the front lines as mentioned previously resemble piano keys are in the foreground , while the circular lines are in the background. The circular lines in the background create a texture and draws attention to the imagery of the ear in the center.

The SpeakUp article, motivates me to see advertisements and publicity in a different context and becoming more aware of the juxtapositions and correspondence that occurs in magazines. There is a correlation between the contrast between publicity's world and the world's actual condition, it was interesting that firms are becoming aware that unplanned juxtapositions in magazines have moral a effect on the viewer , and have decided to change colors of the imagery. In this article, layout design is mentioned as means of linking or correspondence between imagery, text and shapes. In this article it talks specifically of the third page of the new York Times and the relationship with the ad's of Tiffany and Co. and the way it echoes or correspondences tot eh imagery, by the linking of the shapes, text or imagery. It was interesting looking at some examples for the past 30 years that he had collected and looking at the juxtapositions and their relationship through time. It not only motivates me to look at magazine layout and searching for correspondence as well as with the current project , creating a link between our line studies and the world around us. It is important with juxtapositions becuase they can change the meaning of the image next to them, emphasize their content or change it into a conceptual level.

Project 2 : Reading Response

In the reading Graphic Design The New Basics by Ellen Lupton , the chapters lines and rhythm.

Line shows that is just not a simple element it can contain different weights, thickness and texture. In the current project of line investigations as a tool to reflect the interval of progression the use of weight and thickness was use in order to communicate.

The repetition of elements create rhythm and can also describe volumes, planes and textures. One of our line studies reflects this occurrence of the use of repetition of lines in this particular line combination study, it even creates a 3-D surface:

Through the use of a projector as a tool to create diagonal lines, the lines incorporated planes and a perspective. Planes have paths of a moving line and by doing so it creates a linear perspective by which creates optical distortions making near objects appear bigger and far objects become smaller such as the diagonal study below.

We also created combined line studies, by using there basic line studies and combining them and creating other line studies that reflect the same variables: balance, progression and random.

The next stage is creating curved and diagonal lines, by manipulating our first studies by using the scanner, the photocopier (Konica) , we even folded the paper as a different attempt to create diagonal line studies ; and the projector. These are some variations that Keaton and I have created.

Through this project I realized the importance of communication, working together as well as the importance of digital craft.

A Narrative Letterform

The exploration of the differences of letterforms became more evident in the process of building this sequence animation.

• The first part was to pick two typefaces from the font list : I picked Helvetica Std and Futura Std yet the stroke weight was too similar so I changed it. My final selection was Helvetica Std and Goudy Std to make the contrast between both letterforms evident.

I selected the letter "f" because I felt like I could make an interesting animation using this letter. After seeing Tammy's animation in class, I realized that I wanted to talk about fashion or femininity.

• Then I made a list of all the words such as objects, textures and things that start with the letter "f". (In an earlier post)

Week 5 : Presentation Booklet

The end of the delineation projects has been compiled into a booklet (above pics) few example pages of the book. The emphasis of transparency and layers was very important throughout this project to reflect the depth and the projections of the letterforms. Layering and taking into account the spatial quality to reflect depth and dimension on a two-dimensional surface. Measurements for the environmental drawings, was the basic for scaling the whole building and fitting into a tabloid frame. Having consistent line weight throughout the pages made the book consistent.

Project 2: Generative Line Investigation

In Visual Communication we are starting on the second project and we are working in partners . I 'm working with Keaton and the objective is to create line studies that communicate three variables:

Final Statement

My first book for Visual Communication is done; this project used disparate elements and turned into a cohesive nine-page book. The approach to dot compositions and type compositions, were different and similar. After “mindmapping” over the word “nature” I realized that I wanted to talk about the green movement, and it’s impact in our generation. I brainstormed terms that described the movement and it’s effects. After coming with a selective group of nine words, brainstorming turned into the sketching of compositions, which was essential in the process of this book. I wanted to keep in mind what was told in lectures, readings and critiques as a main source of things that I could implement in this book. The compositions started just like the warm-up, black dots with no images and yet the composition had to communicate the words. Thumbnails were made and then iterations, different designs for the same words. After the small group meeting, I realized the importance of communication how my personal of perception was viewed differently by other peers, more iterations where made so the word was more suitable described. The selection of images was crucial, I wanted to keep a cohesive color scheme and the image selection first started to be very literal and after the group discussions, lectures and readings it became clear the importance of collage and layering. I made my mind that my background should be made out of recycle paper to enhance the theme of my book and the use of color green. My selection of images became more conceptual and abstract, and a color scheme was to develop: green, black and white, diagram, yellow, brown and red, this technique added to the cohesiveness of the book.

The approach of the type composition in the Typography I class was very similar. The same words that we had picked out had to be used in the compositions of text the same size (6”x9”) requirement applied, instead of being a dot it was a typeface. Several compositions were made even though; it was harder because letters have edges than the round quality of the circles. Scaling is essential as well as within the dot compositions, to describe the word. Group discussions were arranged and in the same way as in Visual Communication. In the similar context, my description of the word communicated something different to my peers. More iteration was made until I felt that it was clearly convening the word that I was trying to communicate. During the process of the type compositions, the dot compositions were in my mind had an affect in my final type compositions. By picking the typeface Grotesk MT standard and bold, was a good contrast between is straight edges in comparison to the organic and curvilinear dot compositions.

This book works as a cohesive artifact, by the use of similar elements throughout the pages such as the similar color palette, shape, background and the treatment of each page; as well as the sane typeface throughout. I realized the importance of image selection and creating connection among dissonant images, will carry the overall theme of my book.

Throughout this project, I learned not change my thinking not so literal but using other images of examples that can mean the same thing and have the same effect. I learned the value of layout of text and how it could affect the meaning of a word. By doing this project by hand, made me realized the importance of craft. Even though we could have done this book purely in the computer, I learned about the process which I think is essential in a designer as a solve maker. I learned the importance of different design principles and its effect and how it could change the meaning of a word.
After perusing through my final book, as areas of improvement is craft. The ½” hole puncher that I used gave some circles with rough edges that were difficult to give a crisp round edge. Finding better images for some of my compositions. Using a better paper for my back covers, it kept getting dirty and picking any smudge or mark made on the surface.

Reading Response Transparecy

In the reading from “Graphic Design the New Basics” By Ellen Lupton, draws the attention to Layers and Transparency. Layers allows for simultaneous overlapping and the different possibilities of a single design. Through this project, collage is really important in shaping meaning. Transparency allows a perception of different spatial locations, and allows building complexity and allowing layers to mix and merge together. In the development of this project these two techniques allow for the development of concept and complexity. The combination of images and type can impact the viewer positively or negative, my goal is to have type and image complement each other and hopefully express the pros and cons of the green movement. Currently. I am still developing the iterations of my text and some of my image compositions, and the selection of images have shown me the importance of creating relationships and connections throughout all the pages, which was also discussed in the last reading. Based on the lecture, serendipity can happen and make the composition more complex and interesting to the viewer, my goal is to have control over the compositions and make my explanation of the green movement as clear as possible. My objective is to keep in mind the readings, the lecture and the principles of design as I continue in the development of this project.

Project 1 Reading Response

In the reading “Type and Image” Meggs on pg. 94: Field of Tension. In this project a field of tension is created due to the arrangement that is being created along the edges of the 6”x9’ rectangle. The addition of imagery and it’s overlapping as mentioned in the text and its application to this project is to create a connection among dissonant images, which will carry an overall theme. In pages 19-29, draws the importance of images. Image transformation will be used in this project, to altered and create a new conceptual reality in this particular project is our words and the theme of our book. Many of the images that will be use for this project comes from other printed material; it is my role to see these pictures or imagery in a new way and to make conventional objects interesting. The use of cropping will be implemented, yet the advantage of using pattern and other shapes, will help this project rely on certain imagery as just pattern. “Principles of 2D Design” by Wucius Wong in its Chapter 9: Contrast. The importance of having contrast by comparing elements to each other, in this project is made by the relationship of small and big circles and their color, and their proximity to each other. Some of my compositions in this project, contrast of gravity by the stability and instability of the compositions, there are some deviations that add a sense of movement and becomes more dynamic. Space also has a role in this project by the frame that we are given it obliges to look at the negative space being created by the circles that are either overlapped or pushed against each other. “A Primer of Visual Literacy” on pages 110-127 there are several visual techniques in this selection that is being used in this project such as instability, asymmetry, symmetry, and some predictability yet the images will create more spontaneity. Repetition by not only the shape but is the cohesive force that throughout this project will hold the diverse composition together. These readings have broadened my understanding for the universal visual language.

Perfect "k"

My objective was to create a perfect presentation of the letter "k", which was ideal for me because is the first letter of my initial. The process involved in creating the "scaffolding" of the letter and painting it with black gouache.

Elvis Swift one of the contributing artist of "The Magazine of Contemporary Illustration" Vol. Four No. Two. In his design several design principles such as: symmetry , repetition and correspondence are evident. This design shows a face created by numbers around it. The face is on a central axis . Repetition of numbers around the face, creates an overall pattern of a circular shape, giving a sense of a face. Correspondence is also visible in this example , certain numbers such as 1, through out the "face" are similar and shape by it's loosely drawn quality of the numbers; making a relationship of correspondence.
