Review Proposal

For my final review , one statement that i can synthesized from all the classes is the one of the first quotes that was said on the first day of class in Visual Communication in the Fall '09.
in which it was said that the "Principles are used by designer to turn disparate elements into a cohesive whole." These elements are type, image, color and how these work together to give meaning and either relay or anchorage meaning as seen in the spring '10
I will like to demonstrate the importance of layering and how this principle has been used through out the year. As seen in our first project the dot book the imposing of text over image and their reflection in meaning. As well in the delineation drawing of color and drawing and form this dimensionality allow for letter forms to come forward or recede in space. In the spring the last project in Image for the National Geographic the emphasis of this formal quality was not only evident as a medium through the use of transparencies but also as the concept of the earth and the relationship of layers; the use of colors and their of set was vital in order to obtain the right mixing of colors. Layering is also evident in the identity exhibit system.

The process of layering was a very important element through out both semesters also in my change one thing poster in which collaging played an important role as well as my identity project. The layering and collage was also evident in the marilyn poster but also dealing with the saturation of colors and the relationship of colors such as triads and complementary colors and the mixing of colors, a technique learned in the fall'10. The addition of layers not only allows for dimensionality but also for more embedded meaning.

.

The importance of image embedded with meaning and the relationship of text has a fundamental objective throughout the year. that as a graphic designer one acts as a mediator or a guide to the general audience. The importance when text and image worked to together, in a fusion. Or in separation or fragmentation when image and text disrupt each other which was more evident through the use of relay and anchorage. In my taxonomy, the use of text worked in a relay because even though they were marks they connotative a different meaning. Which is also evident in the identity project of the spring in which the icon and subject act upon a anchorage and relay beasis between the image and text. Text can work in the same way by the use of font face it either works as anchorage or relay. Which in my identity they worked in anchorage since they are taking from the same material or medium and their placement is also brings to mind the vision of media.

Project 5 : 6 Degrees could Change the World Reflection

The interaction of image and motion in the menu, we tried to recreate the action of the removal of the atmosphere layers and the heat layers to the earth which is the dvd in the case. Our approach was to create layers by using translucent materials such as transparencies and vellum. Formally, with the motion the viewer visually sees it in comparison with the dvd menu and the book jacket in which is dependent of the viewer to interact and remove the layers.
We decided to use black and white images in our book but keep the circular motif as a consistent element. We decided to collage to portray these images black and white to reflect history . This book sees distant sue to the integration of people which seeing we could have used t in our DVD case. We ran into issues printing it, but overall experience of the interacting with different materials and working with Ray was great. The inside of the book jacket and poster, was approach more like an information graphics describing again the degrees and the effect of the heating over the planet.
The use of coolness of the DVD case, we didn't use it in our poster and jacket. We were goig for the heat and hotter quality that the title of the book contains.

experimenting with materials and assembling

Assembling the DVD cover, we took Tyler's advice and we purchased DVD cases fromjewelboxing. They are pretty sweet!! They are translucent and hopefully this clearness will aid with the rest of materials to have the same effect of layering. We haven't receive the templates from them and hopefully we will get them soon.

We have decided to do the book jacket using vellum so the ink colors hold better, but still have the layering component. We have create a couple of dummies and use prismacolors to see which things and colors might have and text. Text is a big issue since text will be backwards, therefore legibility is compromise. We want to keep the ring motif as a component on the book jacket.

Assembling of the DVD has been interesting and Ray as a mathematical genius was able to figure it out. The size of the booklet and the creation of the cover/ booklet. This booklet also includes the progression of the degrees and it affects and the description will be added that it will happen to earth at that degree.

vectoring of DVD cover

With Ray we have decided to take a vector approach in the front we hope that we the layering of transparencies or see through and see the earth (dvd). With this approach we can visibly draw the layers of the atmosphere and to the core of the heating. In our discussions with tyler the heating of the core seems the most dominant , we think we have solve the solution to this design problem by drawing more bands. The book jacket we want it to unfold and we are considering the making of the whole poster through printing it on a transparency.

We have decided to deal with layering to represent the overview of the earth, by having an interactive component in which the viewer sees through and removes each layer therefore revealing the next as is a evident in the movie to call to action that we the viewer needs to play a role in saving and reducing our consumption so the earth doesn't heat up.

Six Degrees Could Change the World Sketches

We have sketched different ideas the first idea is to use the carbon dioxide molecule as a design element but also to talk about the issue at hand. The second idea that we are exploring is the concept of layering and how the overall images interacting with each other might look. We will like to deal with the round and sphere of the earth. We also talked about masking images into bands or rings to separate the good and the bad ( in creating the cause and the affect from good and bad between the effects of global warming). We both feel of doing something interactive. Today I found a poster of national geographic and they way it fold maybe that could be the book jacket and transforming into a poster.

Project 5 : 6 Degrees could Change the World

Project 5 we are working in partners and I'm working with Ray Alvarez. After watching the film Six Degrees Could Change The World by the National Geographic. We have decided upon two ideas in which are the main topics of the movie dealt with carbon dioxide consumption, cool and dark. After our talk we have decided to create a couple of sketches and then decide which direction.

final bok covers and reflection

The final idea was to used the hands to reflect the actions that describe the title of the book, the main subject in my covers is the woman . For the first book as shown above I used woman posture and how she gracefully clasps her hands as a way to reflect the posture of the woman. The second book she has a dialog in regards what clothes to wear, and the third book deals with perfume and the places and locations where you will place perfume , on the top registrar in reflects the the placement of the perfume on the wrists. On the last book I dealt with relationships in which the inclusion of a male figure is introduced and that interaction between man and woman. All books are divided between two registers, in which the is divided by lace and pattern that i felt portray a woman's touch . I felt that these books are directly targeting women and that is what I want to portray by the use of this pink color. I can still work on the fragrance book and how to be a lady I feel that those are my weakest books of the set.

first book covers

As mentioned in critique I need to get the appropriate lace that suits the theme. The lace on these covers feels to elderly in comparison with my subject. I need to work with the composition and layout of the text.

Enter the unexpected and intriguing realm of scent, where fragrances have the power to calm as well as to stimulate. These tales from the ancient quest for pleasing aromas offer a microcosm of history’s larger movements, from the scented sails of Cleopatra’s barges to modern-day fashion trends. This book is more than a historical overview of one of the world’s oldest industries, although it’s comprehensive, well-researched, and scrupulously accurate in its details. Neither is it just a book of pretty pictures, even though it’s abundantly illustrated with lovely drawings and photographs that include every variety of perfume bottle, ads, paintings, as well as famous (and infamous) figures. Fragrance pursues its subject’s very essence, with a rich panoply of insights that ranges from the botanical origins of fragrant oils and the role of aromatics in economic and religious life to the ways in which scents influence behavior and chemists extract, preserve, and reproduce fragrances. A fascinating stirring of the senses.
