reflection on color

Through this course , not only did we focused on form but at first there was no color the focus was main on the form and shape. Through this second part, I have a different perception of color and to have a closer look at things such the hue, value and chroma. It was interesting learning different theorist and their perception of different color concepts and their views: for instance Itten's version of cold and warm and Alber's. Munsell's concept of color is the only theorist that I found the hardest and his arrangements because I think that I haven't still have the perception in viewing the difference in chroma but I think that I understand the difference between luminosity, lightness and darkness and the intensity and purity of the color.
I was really excited about looking the world differently, I noticed that my dad's ties and seeing the way that color interact with each other. The book that we created I used my dad ties to create different arrangements, the cover of the image is depicted below. I'm very happy with the turn out of the final book.
Another aspect of color is when we created the class calendar, I worked on the month of may and I had to show Itten's Contrast on the (Contrast of Extension Proportional). It was hard , and I decided to use the color green and purple as my colors to show color. The cover for the calendar,I decided to a transparent effect and registration bars on the the right side of the image which the class felt that it worked with the overall feel of the calendar.

seeing color: environmental harmonies II

While I was home, I paid closer attention to the color of my dad's ties ; I decided to use them as my color harmonies:

achromatic

monochromatic

complementary
triad
transparency

optical mixing
vibration

warm/ cool

warm-cool itten

contrast of extension (equal) itten

Munsell's helical

munsell's diagonal score

munsell's color arrangement (harmonious hues, values, and chroma)

munsell's color arrangement (harmonious hues, contrasting values and chroma)

munsell's color arrangement (contrasting hues, harmonious values, harmonious chroma)

color systems and color research first attempt

This is just my first attempt I will try to match it up to the Color Aid used on the left:

seeing color: environmental harmonies

Through these past two weeks I been taking pictures of certain color harmonies, I have decided on using clothes in department stores as a way to depict the different color harmonies.

color harmony: Munsell's depth

Using color aid I created meaningful, color harmony studies based on Munsell's Eight Basic Color Arrangements.

I used the following groupings to create "meaningful" studies:

-music -plastic
-dance -wood
-art -glass
-theater -metal

tonal progression: studying Munsell's depth

I created 9 color scores and created color representations based of Munsell's tree. I used Color Aid and my found color to successfully, create 9 vertical scores in the organization of a band.
I was unable to create the horizontal score , because I kept recreating value changes between the colors, which is not supposed to be created in this score. I'm understanding better Munsell's color theories.

Munsell Scores

1. Vertical
2. Horizontal
3. Diagonal
4. Horizontal-Cross section
5. Diagonal Cross section
6. Circular
7. Flat Spiral
8. Helical
9. Three Dimensional through Psychological Space

Color effects. interactions: Studying Josef Albers

Using 'found color' and some Color Aid, I created several studies that explore the color effects and the interaction of color. By creating studies of Simultaneous contrast and transparency, I'm really excited about color and the drastic changes colors have when they interact with other colors.

Simultaneous and Transparency Contrast

Itten's Studies

We created Itten's studies and created 8 small studies on a 4.5" x 4.5" each square a differnt contrast was depicted.

-Contrast of Hue
-Light-Dark Contrast
-Cold- warm Contrast
-Complementary Contrast
-Simultaneous Contrast
-Contrast of Saturation
-Contrast of Extension (equal)
-Contrast of Extension (proportional)

Images will be coming soon.

Study of Oppositional Pairs: A Focus on Contrast

For Color, Drawing and form the final pairings have been combined and arranged in an accordion book . I used Costco printing and I was really happy with the turn out of my images , I changed one of my pairings , from the category figure ground relationship--contrast/ minimal detection to dominant/reversible.

Paper Studies : Interaction of Color --Studio Practices

Today in studio, the objective was to see the interaction of color, these relationships between color change between colors. Using my found color collection, I created 3 colors to look like 4 and 4 colors look like 3. Here are some examples, that I did during class:

3 looks like 4

Seeing Color: Environmental narrative

Home

I was influenced highly to the films by Jean-Pierre Jeunet with his use of colors in the environment; he captures the Parisian life. In my narrative book I will like to capture the midwest environments and it’s colors in particular in the house. I will like to take pictures of people kitchen, furniture and surrounding space. Variations of colors are evident in people’s home.

Clothes

I personally love clothes and I feel that people dress according on how they feel , and they use color to reflect it. Clothes and color are interesting and appealing , because people make different combinations. Some people are more color coordinated and arrange their clothes in a more organize palette , while others don’t. I will like to focus my narrative book into a study of the several color schemes people create with their clothes.

Department Stores

Stores like Betsey Johnson down on the plaza reflect the extension of color in one store. Throughout all the stores it is evident that color is utilize to attract , or create emphasize on the merchandize being sold. I remember being little and going to a Sanrio store, it was its colors that attract my attention. I will like to study how their environment of the store and its color with its merchandise create and interest people as the walk through department stores.

Food

Food ranges in different colors, in this narrative book I will like to be focusing on vegetables and fruits. These colors are natural and I’m amazed by the different variations and color schemes that can be found. The different shades of green , red and others are evident in these nutritional food.

Reading Response : Interaction of Color

In the reading Interaction of Color by Josef Albers, in which:
I. Color Recollection: they way our visual memory and auditory memory works . The fact that our visual memory is weaker than auditory , he gives an example such as someone saying : red (the color). People would have different color shades on their minds.
II. Color reading and contexture: our ways of reading color and the interaction between colors.
III.Why color paper--- instead of pigment and paint: it list the reasons why is better to use color paper in comparison to paint, for these reasons:
1. Innumerable colors in large range of shades and tints in immediate use.
2. They are easy accessible such as in packing papers, magazines, decoration papers, paint samples. (I understood the reasons for searching for paint swatches around town.)
3.Inexpensive
4. Avoids unnecessary mixing of paints.
5. Save time and materials.
6. Allows to use precisely the same color without the slightest change in tone, light or surface quality.
7.Color paper protects us from undesired and unnecessary addition of texture.
IV. A color has many faces-the relativity of color: color is the most relatively medium in art. As mentioned in last class, and an assignment was giving to us for some exploration on a trial-and-error basis. It it gives me a hint that there will some colors that are will be really hard to change; while there will be other susceptible to change.

creating form. delineating space. defining form

I used the 12" letterform in which my initials are represented as mentioned on my previous post.
The letterforms K and V are intersecting together.
I photographed and created 4 sets of oppositional pairs.
