Reading Response : Web Design is 95% typography & Reactions

It is the information designer's task "to divide up and organize and interpret this mass of printed matter in such a way that the reader will have a good chance of finding what is of interest to him."

Optimizing typography is optimizing readability, accessibility and usability, bring the importance that text is not just there but it's function on a site is very important for the navigation of the user.

The main argument is that there are only a few fonts and the lack of resolution plays a role. Information design is not about the use of good typefaces, it is about the use of good typography. Is true that in different browsers and platforms renders fronts differently. A web designer can control legibility through correct leading, word and letter spacing, active white space and dosed used of color. Some things that were pointed out that I felt were important was for instance the "grid" , by organizing information in a grid it will allow optimal readability. Usability fails when text lines are too long, which can be exhausting. Too many font sizes and the lack of whitespace to allow the reader to rest. I think under the header "Common art school graduate's mistakes are": and I feel like I have fallen in that tramp of text sizes. Thinking about print vs. web sizes are very different. It is through the application of leading, spacing, kerning and measuring font sizes that aid in reading text will look better. In the reactions it was suggested that even though you are laying out the information in a grid there is still possibility of adjustments. Something is to keep in mind considering how technology is changing and the different mediums therefore one needs to make sure that to make it easy to read one has to consider of the various devices through which it can be accessed. Another point that was mentioned in the article, is that we are still new to this medium and we don't fully understand I feel that as years have pass and more of websites are build , designers can identify things that work and things that don't work. An important sentence that I took from the reaction, is that the designer has to organize his design with regards to the message.
